Piano Trio"As the nursery rhyme winds along..." |
Originally prompted to write a piano trio as a competition piece, I found the trio format very satisfying to work with, and this piece was written in a couple weeks, although tweaking took magnitudes longer. Although carrying the title:"As the nursery rhyme winds along", there's no particular programme. However, the concept of the nursery rhyme as a form of poetry used or heard by most of us at some point, which we learn as children without necessarily understanding, or needing to understand the words, struck me as an apt metaphor for what can be a headlong, unquestioning tumble through life if we allow received dogma to govern our ambitions. We wind along in a culture where to succeed and fit in, and to feel we attain purposeful goals, we must strive for ever improved careers, children, property. A wind-up musical box playing a nursery rhyme performs the same repeated tune. Some of us wake up and try to break away from the norm.
