The Glass Cabinet |
This work is inspired by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies' April 2007 address to the ISM in defense of western classical music (new and old). The various quotes here include some from that speech (not PMD's own, rather quotes and paraphrases, often in Latin, from Cicero, Hippocrates, John the Scot (Erigena) etc.). Not having wanted to write anything "grand" in this work for intimate forces, the quotes when put together as a kind of collage seem never-the-less to have coalesced into something of a testimony for"art-music" in the face of the consumerist society. The words: Reference: Ars sine scientia nihil potest, Vitruvius "Consumo, ergo sum" PMD Tractaro, ergo sum. SE Ars longa, vita brevis. Hippocrates Diversi diversis delecantur. Erigena O tempora! O mores! Cicero Musica innata est quaedam communis seipam delectation. Erigena Translation: Art is powerless without knowledge, "I consume, therefore I am" I perform, therefore I am. Life is short, art is long. Different people like different things. O the times! O the habits! Music, by its very nature, is a delight. Peter Marsh, 27th June, 2007 Hampshire
