Andrew Thomas Two Part Invention

This work was commissioned by the Society for Living Composers for a concert at The Space, London. The commission stipulated that the piece must be fast and last no longer than four minutes. My response is essentially a two-part invention featuring call and response that is accentuated by spatial separation of the players. During a performance of this work the players should be positioned as far away from each other as the venue will allow, ideally so they are facing each other and playing over the audience (i.e. they are separated by the audience). The players must not lower their instruments or move them away from their mouth at any point during a performance.
