Elektrostatic @ Arnolfini: Philomel
Jane Manning, Stephen Cornford, The Bristol Ensemble
£8.00/£6.00 concs. (Available here)
In 1972 American composer Milton Babbitt's influential composition Philomel, for virtuoso voice and electronic tape, was performed at Arnolfini by Jane Manning. We will revisit this performance, and the instruments on which it was produced and performed - Jane Manning's voice, the Revox player, and the original tapes. Alongside this, artist Stephen Cornford will perform a new piece, also on tape machines with live vocal accompaniment, which reuses elements sampled magnetically from the original recordings of Philomel. Composer Richard Barnard will create a 'reliquary of sound' using a physical tape fragment from Philomel accompanied by fragments from Babbitt's electronic music re-scored for live instruments. Finally, Babbitt's virtuosic Wind Quartet (1953) will be performed by the Bristol Ensemble, giving us a chance to reassess his early instrumental work within the context of his electronic music, and the composer's death earlier this year.
