Saturday 2nd April, 19:45
Franz Doppler Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise
J. S. Bach - Kalevi Aho Sarabande and Presto
Erwin Schulhoff Sonata for flute and piano
Brett Dean Demons
Claude Bolling Three movements from Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio
In this recital Sharon Bezaly features two major works of the flute and piano repertoire, Doppler’s popular Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise and the characterful and lyrical Sonata by Erwin Schulhoff, whose career was tragically cut short in a wartime concentration camp and whose works are now being rediscovered by performers internationally. These are interspersed with works for solo flute: Sharon Bezaly’s own innovative pairing of a Sarabande by Bach and a movement written for her by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho and another dedication, Brett Dean’s Demons, performed in the composer’s 50th birthday year. Rounding off the recital are three movements from Claude Bolling’s Suite, which infectiously combines the spirit of Bach and modern jazz.
