Frederic Griffith: a Welshman in Paris

Saturday 2nd April, 17:00

Frederic Griffith Fantasie on Edward German’s Savoy Opera Merrie England
Charles-Wilfred de Bériot Sonata op. 64
Emile Bernard Romance
Paul Taffanel Trois morceaux de lecture à vue
Dafydd Bullock Nocturne (world première)

For over twenty years Kenneth Smith and Paul Rhodes have been unearthing neglected gems of both the British and the French flute repertoire. In this unique recital they bring the two together, focusing on the figure of Swansea-born Frederic Griffith, an Eisteddfod prizewinner who in 1888 went to study Paris with Paul Taffanel, the most influential flautist of his day.

This recital included works from the mid-1880s that Griffith might have encountered during his time in Paris along with the Fantasie that Griffith arranged from the most famous work by his colleague and friend Edward German, Merrie England. Kenneth Smith and Paul Rhodes bring the recital back into the twenty-first century with a piece recently written for them by the Welsh composer Dafydd Bullock.

This concert was generously supported by the Music Reprieval Trust.
