The Arcomis International Flute Event brings Europe's leading exponents of the instrument together for just one weekend under one roof – the magnificent bronze dome of the iconic Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay and one of its state-of-the-art auditoria, BBC Hoddinott Hall, home to the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Framed by a gala concert by the resident orchestra and a rare performance in the Welsh capital by the world-renowned London Sinfonietta, the event contains celebrity recitals, masterclasses, workshops, demonstrations, and special performance events to appeal to everyone from active or aspiring professionals, those new to the instrument and the general public.
The event's emphasis is on the new – not just the rising generation of outstanding players but also the most significant music composed for the instrument in the last ten years, performed along with the very best of the instrument's established repertoire. Mozart, Debussy and Nielsen sit alongside a world première of a new concerto and a number of new pieces that will receive premières at the event. The same auditorium in which our world-class soloists perform their concertos and signature recitals will also play host to over 150 schoolchildren performing a specially commissioned work for massed flutes and percussion.
Ever since its opening in 2004 the Wales Millennium Centre has stood for both uncompromising excellence and diversity and inclusiveness. The Arcomis International Flute Event 2011 aims to be a truly inspirational event in an inspirational building – come and join us.
